Well done to World Cup semi-finalist Alex Greenwood from Bootle
Well done to our very own #Sefton Lioness Alex Greenwood and all the Lionesses who have won hearts and minds at the 2019 #FIFAWomensWorldCup
We've always known Alex, who grew up in #Bootle, is a perfect influence for our next generation of sporting stars...but now the nation knows too!
Sefton’s Lioness Alex is a perfect role model for borough’s budding sport stars.
England star and Sefton’s very own Alex Greenwood should serve as an inspiration to budding footballers in the borough, says the council’s Active Sefton team.
Alex, who has passionately represented her hometown of Bootle in the world of women’s football from an early age, was one of the valiant Lionesses who bowed out of the 2019 Women’s World Cup last night (July 2) after a heroic run all the way to the semi-finals.
Although England Women lost out 2-1 on the night to the USA, Greenwood and her teammates have won the hearts of the nation and firmly put the spotlight on women’s football.
However Alex’s sporting heroics will come as no surprise to her family, friends and young sporting stars back home in Sefton.

Having proudly presented Active Sefton’s annual Sports Awards previously, Alex has continued to inspire and motivate the next generation of women footballers and other sporty youngsters in the borough.
Her impact will be felt strongest at her former schools. As an ex pupil of both St Monica’s Primary School and Savio Salesian High School, Alex has often cited motivation throughout her school years in the borough as a catalyst for her later career.
Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Alex’s success comes as no surprise to us all at Sefton.”
“Many will recognise her from training at our Litherland Sports Park, while others will vividly remember her motivational speech at the 2016 Sefton Sports Awards.”
“I would implore all our young sporting stars to take a look at Alex’s hard work and dedication to getting where she is today as one of the world’s best female footballers and her progress is a testament to the excellent school and sports facilities we have within Sefton.”
“On behalf of us all at Sefton I would like to place on record a massive congratulations to Alex and her fellow Lionesses for their incredible World Cup run.”
