Roaring flames seen at Southport Train Station which caused major delays on the Southport line
A track fire at Southport Train Station caused delays this afternoon on the Southport line.
Flames were seen roaring through Southport train station earlier this afternoon after a fire caused major disruption for customers.
Shocking footage and photos by Sandgrounder Radio showed the rail station glowing orange as a fire could be seen inside, at about 5.15pm today.
Merseyside Fire & Rescue have confirmed there was a track fire at Southport Station this afternoon.
It was thought that an electrical box and debris 'thought to be involved'
A spokeswoman for the fire service confirmed two fire engines were called to the scene and the fire was 'already out' as crews arrived.
A spokeswoman for the force said: “We can confirm that the fire has now been extinguished.”
“On arrival, the fire was already out but crews used water to cool the tracks after the electrics were isolated. Crews left the scene at 5.48pm”.
Merseyrail posted a statement which said: “Due to an operational incident at Southport, services on the Southport line meeting with disruption this evening.”
A spokesperson from Merseyrail said: “Due to an operational incident at Southport, the 18:27 service from Southport to Liverpool and the 19:13 service from Liverpool Central to Hunts Cross have both been cancelled this evening.”
“At approximately 7:15pm, the services on the Southport line resumed. The first service to leave Southport - Hunts Cross is the 1907.”
