Police offer warning to bikers after incident last week
An attempted theft of a motorcycle was reported in #Southport last week, when three 3 males on two mopeds attempted to steal a bike while it was at a petrol station on Roe Lane and the owner was waiting to pay for fuel. On this occasion the owner managed to stop the thieves, who made off onto Hartwood Road. Investigations continue to try and identify the offenders.
Damage was caused to the steering lock in this attempted theft and in other cases the thieves have 'pushed ' a stolen bike away, by a pillion passenger on a second bike using a foot on the rear number plate of the targeted bike. They have got some long distances using this method.
None of us should have to consider this type of theft, but sadly, this type of crime that has been seen in other towns and cities is now filtering out to this area. So, if you are riding in a group and stop to fill up, always leave one or two riders to look after bikes while others pay. If you are riding solo, always try to use the fuel pumps nearest to the store doors.
These offenders will break steering locks to try to steal bikes, so it is worth considering using another type of lock EVERY TIME you leave your bike unattended, as inconvenient as this may be. Even outside your home, however short of a time you intend to leave your bike. These thieves act very quickly.
Be vigilant, and if you see anyone you believe may be looking to steal your bike or someone elses, get to a busy location with good CCTV coverage and report it to us on 101 or in an emergency 999.
