Klopp would be proud as Victoria Road in Formby turns Red for the Reds!

There’s a fresh splash of colour on one of Formby’s most iconic streets — and it’s turning heads for all the right reasons. The street signs at both ends of Victoria Road have been painted a striking bright red, and while no one knows exactly who is responsible, the transformation has been met with widespread admiration.

It’s hard not to draw a connection between the bold red signs and the road’s glittering football heritage. After all, Victoria Road is no ordinary address — it’s been home to some of Liverpool Football Club’s biggest legends, including Steven Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers, and Jurgen Klopp.

The red signs, now standing proudly at either end of the tree-lined avenue, feel like a fitting tribute to the street’s rich LFC legacy. Whether it’s an anonymous artist, a devoted fan, or a clever nod from the council, the newly painted signs appear to celebrate the footballing giants who once lived behind the gates of Formby’s most prestigious properties.

At the heart of this story lies the now-famous Victoria Road mansion, once dubbed one of the most impressive homes in the area. Built in 2005 by a local property developer, the seven-bedroom estate became a local landmark when Steven Gerrard took ownership. With an indoor pool, home cinema, three living rooms, and a landscaped garden, it was the most significant residential build in Formby for nearly a century.

In 2008, Gerrard added a state-of-the-art gym at the end of the garden. Although it caused a stir among neighbours who objected to its modern design, planning permission was granted, and the gym was built — complete with hand-worked copper panels and sweeping glass walls designed by David Dickerson of DK Architects.

In 2012, Brendan Rodgers purchased the mansion from Gerrard after being appointed Liverpool manager, and in a twist of fate, Jurgen Klopp would later rent the property during his successful reign at Anfield. More recently, current manager Arne Slot chose to reside elsewhere, but the connection between Liverpool FC and Victoria Road remains unbreakable. The property was recently listed for sale at £4.25 million.

Victoria Road’s footballing fame doesn’t stop there. Former Everton icons Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson were among the first Premier League stars to move to the road, with Rooney purchasing his home at the age of just 18. Pundit Alan Shearer and former Reds enforcer Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock also lived on the street.

Victoria Road’s roots stretch back to the late 19th century, when landowner Charles Weld-Blundell envisioned a seaside escape connected to the new tramway at Freshfield station. Today, the road is home to a blend of grand period homes and modern architectural masterpieces, many boasting private gyms, smart technology, and sprawling gardens. It leads down to the picturesque Formby Point, home to scenic pine trails and the area’s beloved red squirrels.

And now, with its bright new red street signs, Victoria Road not only reflects the colour of its legendary footballing residents — it proudly wears it.

Whoever painted the signs may remain a mystery, but one thing is certain: they’ve created a bold and brilliant tribute to the road’s proud Liverpool FC history.
