Former homeless people learn barista skills
A group of people supported by homelessness charity Emmaus Merseyside have completed a barista course run by Crosby Coffee Roasters.
Emmaus Merseyside is an award-winning charity that provides a home, training, work opportunities and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness. Five people supported by the charity and two Emmaus staff members completed the Crosby Coffee barista course on Friday 15 October.
Commenting on the course, Stewart, one of the residents of Emmaus Merseyside, said: “It was a great experience at Crosby Coffee and I learned loads. Our host was brilliant and she explained the whole process. We then got to do some coffee tasting and taught the steps to coffee making. This included grinding the beans, making our own coffees and having a go at some latte-art.”
The one-day course took place at Crosby Coffee’s Roastery on Grigg Lane in Liverpool. The course covered sourcing coffee beans, roasting, grinding and how to make the perfect cup of coffee. Crosby Coffee are Liverpool's specialty coffee roasters and suppliers who help, educate and consult in any aspect of the coffee experience.
Lena Stan, Trainer & Quality Control at Crosby Coffee, said: “We’re delighted to have partnered with Emmaus Merseyside to deliver this barista training. It’s inspiring to see the participants immerse themselves in learning the craft of coffee-making, from understanding the journey of the beans to mastering latte art.”
“The enthusiasm and dedication they’ve shown is truly commendable, and we’re proud to contribute to their personal and professional development. Opportunities like this can open doors, and we’re excited to see how they’ll use these skills in the future.”
While at Emmaus, people are given the opportunity for a fresh start, gaining skills and work experience alongside training and personal development. The Crosby Coffee barista course was organised to help people gain new skills and knowledge in readiness for the launch of a new Emmaus Merseyside Community Hub and coffee shop in Seaforth.
Marc Bamber, Chief Executive Officer at Emmaus Merseyside, said: “It was an absolutely fabulous training course over at Crosby Coffee, giving our learners some skills and confidence as part of their ongoing personal development. We’re excited to have these skills being put into practice at our new Community Hub which will provide people with valuable work experience to add to their knowledge.”
The Emmaus Merseyside Community Hub will open to the public in December within the grounds of the charity’s community garden. As well as serving drinks, cakes and light refreshments, the Hub will be a new shared space for interaction, learning, personal development and improved wellbeing.
