Foggy Night Triggers Major Emergency Response Off Sefton Coast
On a cold, fog-laden night, a full-scale emergency response was triggered along Sefton’s coastline after reports suggested a potential helicopter crash at sea. Military helicopters from Woodvale were conducting planned night training exercises when an emergency transponder unexpectedly activated. Initial assumptions were that an aircraft had possibly gone down in the water.
In response, lifeboat stations from Southport and New Brighton were swiftly mobilised alongside the coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon. Due to limited visibility caused by dense fog, coastguard crews faced significant challenges, leading to the deployment of drone teams for additional aerial support. Foghorns resonated along the coast as lifeboats, helicopter teams, and drones joined forces to assess the situation and ensure public safety.
After a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that the transponder activation had been accidental. All emergency teams were subsequently stood down, bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.
This coordinated response highlights the readiness and commitment of our local emergency services in safeguarding our community, even in the most challenging conditions.
