Family Issues Statement and Photograph of Missing Teen Daniel Halliday

The family of 14-year-old Daniel Halliday, who tragically went missing in the River Mersey near Crosby Beach, has released a photograph and a heartfelt statement appealing for privacy during this difficult time.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 7pm on Sunday, June 30, following a report of concern for the teenager's safety. Daniel had been swimming and jumping waves with his older brother near the radar tower when he was swept away by a strong current. Despite his brother's brave efforts to save him, the current proved too powerful.

The call for help prompted an immediate and extensive search operation involving Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The area around the radar tower was quickly cordoned off, with officers redirecting passers-by to keep the search zone clear.

Throughout the night and into the following morning, rescue teams scoured the area, both from the shore and on the water. Despite the relentless efforts of the emergency services, Daniel has not yet been located. After a grueling 15-hour search, the coastguard confirmed that the operation had been stood down on July 1.

In a deeply emotional statement, Daniel's family expressed their devastating loss and pleaded for privacy as they grieve. "Our worst fear is that this tragic accident has taken our lovely boy from us. Daniel was jumping waves with his big brother who tried to save him, but the current was too strong," the family shared. "Daniel is a loving son, brother, cousin, nephew, and grandson. The family are all devastated, and we hope that we will be allowed our privacy at this time. Thank you."

The community of Crosby has been profoundly affected by this incident. Friends, neighbours, and local residents have expressed their support and condolences to the Halliday family. The public's response has been overwhelmingly compassionate, with many offering to assist in any way possible.

Specially trained officers from Merseyside Police are currently providing ongoing support to Daniel's family, helping them navigate through this tragic period. The police have also reiterated the family's request for privacy, urging the public and media to respect their wishes.

The Sefton Bubble extends its deepest sympathies to the Halliday family and their loved ones during this heart-wrenching time. Daniel's disappearance is a stark reminder of the dangers present in open waters, even for experienced swimmers. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of water safety and awareness, particularly during the summer months when such activities are more frequent.

As the community continues to rally around the Halliday family, we remain hopeful for a positive outcome. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. For now, we ask that everyone honours the family's request for privacy and offers their support in respectful and meaningful ways.
