A person has sadly died after being hit by a train at Fisherman’s Path near Freshfield Train Station in Formby.
All trains were cancelled with bus replacement in service until 5:30pm. Trains are now running again.
Merseyrail said there was a disruption on the line between Moorfields and Formby just before 4pm on Tuesday, August 22 following an "incident on the line".
National Rail later confirmed that a person was hit by a train between Hall Road and Southport. Emergency services were called to the scene, including an air ambulance.
British Transport Police have now confirmed the person died at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics and police.
A spokesperson from BTP said: "Officers were called to the line near Formby at 3.50pm today (22 August) following reports of a causality on the line. Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
An update from Merseyrail said: "Due to an incident on the line near Freshfeild station, services on the Southport and Hunts Cross line will face delays and alterations to service. Some services will start and terminate at Hall Road."
A spokesperson from National Rail said: "A person has been hit by a train between Hall Road and Southport. To allow the emergency services to safely carry out their work, all lines are closed.”
"As a result, trains are currently unable to run between Hall Road and Southport. This is expected until 6pm."
