Dispersal zone - Marian Square
Officers in Sefton are cracking down on anti-social behaviour in the Marian Square area, by introducing a new temporary dispersal zone. The zone will be in operation from 6pm today (Friday, 30 September) until 5.59pm on Sunday, 2 October. The area covered by the dispersal zone includes the area bounded by Peterborough Drive, Magdalene Square, St Jerome’s Way, Marian Way, Sarah’s Croft, Swift’s Lane, Bridge Lane and to include all parks, open spaces and roads within those perimeters. The zone has been brought in under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 which gives police officers and police community support traffic officers powers to direct people they suspect are causing or likely to cause crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour to leave the area for up to 48 hours. If a person has been directed to leave the area and returns during the period of the dispersal notice, an offence will have been committed. Any breaches of this can lead to their arrest. Neighbourhood Inspector Phil Hatton said: "We have received a small number of reports of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour involving large gatherings in this area and we are responding with the introduction of this zone. “This activity in the area demonstrates that we are listening to community concerns and responding. “We are not trying to bother people, young or old, who are going about their legitimate daily business. However, we recognise the impact drug taking can have on individuals and communities, and will be targeting people involved in this type of criminality in our area. “The dispersal zone gives us the powers we need to deal effectively with people and I would urge anyone in the area who has any information about drug activity to contact 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
