Bootle War Memorial Rededication Event

Updated: Oct 26, 2019

A local monument is set to be re-dedicated following the completion of a conservation project.

Bootle War Memorial, located in King’s Gardens on Stanley Road, was awarded a grant of £88,320 by War Memorials Trust through its grant scheme supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s First World War Memorials Programme, earlier this year.

To mark the completion of the work and re-dedication of the memorial, a commemoration event will be taking place on Saturday, September 3 and is open to all of the local community. Scaffolding around the Bootle War Memorial is currently being taken down to reveal the restored bronze and stone work statues, including mother and child, airman, seaman and soldier.

On the day, Colonel Martin Amlôt, Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside and former Officer in the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment, will unveil the War Memorial. There will also be readings and speeches from local historians and War Memorials Trust.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “I am delighted we have been able to restore this very important monument and I would like to thank War Memorials Trust for their support.

“I look forward to joining the whole community out in force when we officially reopen the monument, remembering those who sacrificed their lives during the conflicts.” Following the event, community celebrations will continue right through until the evening with a funfair from 12pm and an outdoor screening of sing-a-long smash 1978 hit, Grease at 8pm.

The works will cost around £115,000 and forms part of the ongoing restoration of South Park and King's Gardens. The remaining cost, following the War Memorials Grant, was match funded using external money paid to the Council from local planning developments.

The event starts at 11am and is open to all.
